Ancient Egypt

 Cairo

The Triumphant City - is the famous capital of Egypt, the cradle of civilization and the beacon of all religions. It is the largest city in the Middle East and Africa and lies at the center of all routes leading to, and from the three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. The greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of its delta. Here the Nile divides into its two distributaries: Rosetta and Damietta. Cairo is very unique due to the balance between its past and present. On its west side lays the Ancient Egyptian city of Giza, the legendary capital of the Old Kingdom and the site of the Pyramids, the only wonder surviving of the Seven Wonders of the World. Indeed, a journey through Cairo is a journey through history.

The city of Alexandria was named after its founder, Alexander the Great, and as the base of the Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt, quickly became one of the greatest cities of the Hellenistic era second only to Rome in size and wealth. However, upon the founding of Cairo by Egypt's medieval rulers, its status as the country's capital ended, and fell into a long decline, which by the late Ottoman period, had been reduced to little more than a small fishing village. Very little of the ancient city has survived into the present day. Much of the royal and civic quarters sank beneath the harbor due to earthquakes, and much of the rest has been rebuilt upon in modern times.
